A secondary school teacher in Vietnam was arrested on Monday after he allegedly made one of his 14-year-old students pregnant.
The family of the 14-year-old student in Lao Cai province filed a police complaint when they discovered the girl was 12 weeks pregnant, VN Express reported. Nguyen Viet Anh, 36, confessed he had intercourse with the student multiple times since late 2017 when she was still a seventh-grader.
The family said they only found out about the relationship when they noticed the girl showing abnormal symptoms and took her to a hospital, where her pregnancy was revealed. A DNA test will be conducted by police to determine if Nguyen is the father of the baby before they take further action.
In Vietnam, intercourse with any persons under the age of 13 is considered as statutory rape and is punishable by 12 years in jail up to a death sentence. Intercourse with a child between 13 and 16 years of age can land offenders with a maximum penalty of 15 years of imprisonment.
