Vietnamese authorities are investigating a former senior prosecutor after he was allegedly filmed molesting a young girl in Ho Chi Minh City.
The CCTV camera footage captured on Monday night shows a young girl entering an elevator followed by Nguyen Huu Linh, VN Express reported. Linh, 61, is allegedly seen grabbing the five-year-old girl and kissing her the moment the elevator doors close.
It is only when the doors open again that the girl escapes the man’s clutches.
The police summoned him for questioning on April 3, where he reportedly stated he had only “petted” the girl as he thought she was cute.
Senior HCMC police officer Nguyen Sy Quang said Linh was visiting family members in the building when the assault happened. Witnesses claimed that he was drunk on that night.
Tran Ngoc Nu, a lawyer in the city, said Linh’s actions could be considered molestation of an underaged person and may be punishable by six months to three years of jail time.
The CCTV footage went viral and caused public outrage.
According to the NGO ActionAid, 87% of females in Vietnam experience harassment in public areas.
