A record-breaking pregnant Burmese python more than five metres long has been captured by scientists in Florida, USA.
The reptile is reported to be the largest python to ever be captured in the Big Cypress National Preserve in the Florida Everglades, CNN reported. She weighed approximately 64kg and had 73 eggs developing inside her.
The official Facebook page of the Big Cypress National Preserve—a swampland spanning 729,000 acres—showed a photo of the four researchers posing with the gigantic snake. The post explained that the snake was caught as part of a research program.
Burmese pythons are native to Southeast Asia but have become prevalent in the state of Florida. Official statistics suggest that there are as many as 100,000 pythons living in the Everglades. The state holds competitions that encourage hunters to hunt as many snakes as possible.
