Police in North Sumatra, Indonesia detained a high school student after an alleged bomb scare.
On April 13, a black backpack was found in front of a supermarket on Jalan Melanton Siregar, Pematang Siantar, The Jakarta Post reported. A note saying “Lailaha Illallah (There is no deity but God) there’s a bomb, you die!” was on the backpack, causing panic.
Police called in the bomb squad, who examined the backpack to find only a flower pot.
The next day, the police arrested 17-year-old high school student identified as IAN, the person responsible for placing the backpack.
After preliminary investigations, the student confessed that he had placed the backpack for fun and pointed out that he was not linked to any terrorist affiliations.
IAN is set to be charged under Article 6 of the Law on Terrorism. If found guilty, the 17-year-old could face a maximum of five years of jail time.
