A 73-year-old man and his 50-year-old girlfriend jumped to their deaths from a residential building in Sai Ying Pun on Hong Kong on Monday.

At 1 pm, the man and the woman were found lying on the ground outside the Sea View Mansion on Connaught Road West after they jumped from the rooftop on the 24th floor, Sing Tao Daily reported.

Paramedics arrived but both were pronounced dead at the scene.

After learning the couple lived in Sea View Mansion, police broke into their apartment and found a note saying they decided to commit suicide because of health problems. It was understood that the man had been suffering from chronic diseases, while his girlfriend had terminal breast cancer.

The man told his neighbor he was under great pressure, not only suffering pain from his own illnesses, but he also needed to take care of his sick girlfriend and his 25-year-old mentally disabled son, Ming Pao Daily reported.

The woman left behind her 14-year-old son, who lives in a boarding school. The Samaritans run a 24-hour multilingual suicide prevention hotline +852 2896 0000 or emails can be sent to jo@samaritans.org.hk.
