A Filipino man has been accused of stealing more than 250,000 dirhams (US$68,073) from hotel guests in Dubai.
The 33-year-old Filipino, who worked in the accounts section of the hotel before being arrested, embezzled a total of 252,245 dirhams worth of guests’ security deposits. The incident was reported to Al Barsha police in November last year, The National reported.
The Dubai Criminal Court said the Filipino forged the forms from guests and put his own bank details so that the money was sent to him. The transactions were carried out between November 2017 and July last year.
A manager from the hotel said that they received notice from their bank informing them about transfers from the hotel’s account to the same credit card. It was discovered that the Filipino had been replacing the credit card numbers of hotel guests with his own.
“It turned out that card belonged to the defendant. We reported him to the police for embezzlement and forgery of reclaim forms,” the manager said.
The police were informed of the incident and the Filipino was arrested. On April 17 at the Dubai Court of First Instance, the court accused the Filipino of embezzling from his workplace, forgery and use of forged documents.
