A Filipino domestic worker has received 50,000 riyals (US$14,420) as a settlement in a rape case in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III said the 22-year-old Filipina will be sent home after her case is finished, the Philippine News Agency reported.
“The victim is being assisted now by the Assistance to Nationals Section of the Philippine Consulate in Jeddah,” Bello said. Bello added that the Filipina’s recruitment agency, Iemploy Manpower Services Inc and its counterpart in Saudi Arabia Madar Alkharj, will be held administratively liable despite the settlement of the case.
The Philippine Overseas Labor Office is now investigating the involvement of the woman’s recruitment agency in the rape case and four other maltreatment cases. Four Filipinas were allegedly forced to work for 10 hours in a different household and for another two hours at their original employer’s house.
