A 36-year-old man from mainland China was caught by several passers-by at an MTR station in Kowloon, Hong Kong, after he attempted to steal from an Indonesian woman on Sunday.

At 4pm, when the 37-year-old Indonesian domestic worker was riding an escalator from the platform to the concourse at Sham Shui Po MTR station, the suspect opened her backpack secretly from behind, Apple Daily reported. When the woman noticed him trying to take out her wallet, she cried for help.

Still on the escalator, the suspect tried to run away, but a number of bystanders chased after him and tried to subdue him. He was later brought under control by several members of the public, one of whom, a man, was injured during the tussle. The domestic worker was later seen sitting on the floor, crying.

MTR staff arrived and held the suspect until police officers arrived and arrested the man. They then took him to the police station for questioning.
