案發當天，李某以單獨談事或交代工作為借口，分別將幾名被害人獨自安排在各個房間。李某首先來到第一個被害人所在的房間，表示要送禮物給她，要求她先閉上眼睛，「閉眼就送你禮物」。對方依言閉眼後，等來的不是禮物，而是李某趁機掏出刀將其殺害。
隨後，李某在此房間內洗澡，更換上事先準備好的衣服，來到另外的兩個房間，如法炮制，又殺害了兩名女子。
當天只有一位女子，對李某具備足夠的戒心，害怕自己閉眼後李某後圖謀不軌，所以怎麽也不肯閉眼，最後李某只好放棄殺她。
當日中午，酒店服務員打掃客房時發現了殺人現場於是報警。警方趕到後，李某躲在房間陽台上，聲稱自己在三亞一間超市和一間酒吧內放置了炸彈，公安機關立刻出動約500名警力在李某所聲稱的區域對群眾進行疏散，封鎖超市和酒吧5個小時進行搜查，但未發現炸彈—李某只是虛張聲勢，拖延自己的被捕。
庭審期間，李某承認殺害3名女性，但表示對殺人原因和過程記憶模糊，請求法院判處自己死刑。
