A Vietnamese weightlifter is facing an eight-year ban after he tested positive for banned substances in a urine test.

According to the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF), 24-year-old Trinh Van Vinh tested positive when his urine showed exogenous testosterone, which is banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), VN Express reported.

Vinh won a silver medal at the 2018 Asian Games in the 61-kilogram category. At the games, his urine samples tested negative for any substances but three months later at the National Games in November, he failed the drug tests conducted by experts from the IWF.

He is now facing a US$5,000 fine and an eight-year ban from all types of weightlifting contests.

Vinh is one of the most prominent athletes in Vietnam. His accolades include one gold and two silver medals at the Asia Weightlifting Championships in 2016 and 2017, as well as a gold medal at the Southeast Asian Games in 2017 and gold in the same year at the World Weightlifting Championship.
