Over 150 attendees and speakers gathered in Hong Kong on Saturday to hold discussions on how science fiction can help humans predict the future and even improve their livelihoods.
With a theme of “Aliens on the Galactic Silk Road”, sci-fi fans congregated to consider which innovations may become reality, what other civilizations may be like, and how similar “aliens” could actually be to humans. Speakers explored the relationships between mythology, the history of science, ethics, morality and the creative “free” thinking as realized by sci-fi authors, screenwriters, and film-makers.
Producer and Director Alexandre Philippe provided an insight into Ridley Scott’s pioneering movie “Alien” which this year celebrates its 40th anniversary. Philippe’s film “Memory: The Origins of Alien” has just had its international premiere here in Hong Kong. It provides a fascinating insight into the origins of the 1979 movie and shares how Philippe worked closely with the film’s screenwriter Dan O’Bannon.
Closer to home, sci-fi has entered a golden age in China, with the film “The Wandering Earth”, and many sci-fi novelists and their works, attracting considerable attention at home and abroad. At this year’s Melon, renowned local writers from Hong Kong Chen Ho-Kei and Hon Lai-Chu joined award-winning Chinese writers Sean Wang (Mr Pets) and Anna Wu for an open discussion on what they focus on creatively.
Other distinguished guests included Robbie Stamp, the Executive Producer of “The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy”, Jean-Luc Margot, Professor of Astronomy and leading SETI researcher; Andrew Kwan, CEO, Edore and education industry entrepreneur; and Scarlett Li, CEO and Founder, Zebra Media.
Melon 2019 showcased more than 20 thought-provoking sessions including keynote speeches, panel discussions, freestyle presentations, seminars and workshops, as well as the popular networking events that allowed attendees to meet with speakers in person.

Fritz Demopoulos, founder of Melon said, “Science Fiction provides exceptional opportunities to create brilliant new ideas, and many of them are being discussed or considered by our range of creative, scientific and business-focused speakers during Melon 2019”.
The conference was sponsored and organized by The Queen’s Road Foundation, with Lightning International.
