The Philippine government said there would be no Filipino migrant workers deported from the United Arab Emirates after reports claimed many would be sent home.
A news report said foreign workers in 35 job categories who are over the age of 40 would be deported to make way for UAE nationals by April 2019 to solve the country’s unemployment crisis, the Manila Standard reported.
The occupations supposedly to be vacated by foreign workers were pharmacists, medical secretaries, administrative clerks, human resources officers, receptionists, treasurers, librarians, security guards, purchasing managers, debt collectors, cashiers, tour guides and others.
However, the Department of Labor and Employment said the report was not true and no Filipino workers would be deported. Labor Attache Alejandro Padaen of the Philippine Overseas Labor Office (POLO) in Abu Dhabi said a UAE official confirmed that there was nothing to fear.
Omar Abulrahman Salem Alnuami, the Assistant Secretary for Communication and International Relations of the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE), said it was all “fake news.”
Another UAE official, Asmaa Alamadani, the executive director of MOHRE’s International Bilateral Relations Department, spoke to Labor Attache Felicitas Bay of POLO Dubai, who assured her that the news is “not true at all.”
