Authorities in Vietnam seized 9.12 tonnes of elephant tusks concealed in timber containers at a port on Tuesday.

Police say the seizure at Tien Sa Port in Da Nang was one of, if not, the biggest busts in recent years, VN Express reported. The containers were reportedly brought into the country from the Democratic Republic of the Congo and were registered under a business in Quang Nam province.

Border guards, customs officials and police are investigating the case together. Despite being outlawed in 1992, the ivory trade continues to have a strong foothold in Vietnam, where ivory products are in demand for medicinal and decorative use.

Vietnam is also a hub for wildlife products trafficked mostly from Africa, but also from neighboring countries. Local authorities have seized more than 56 tonnes of ivory since 2009.
