A Filipino domestic worker who was allegedly sexually abused by her employer in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia has finally returned to the Philippines after turning to social media for help.

In January, Annie (not her real name) went to Saudi Arabia to take up a job as a domestic worker to support her three children back in the Philippines. However, on her first day of work, she claimed that her male employer sexually assaulted her, including an attempt to rape her, GMA News reported.

Annie said she reported the incident to her recruitment agency, who advised her to stop working. She said she even had to use a knife to defend herself from her employer who continued to make sexual advances. Her female employer allegedly became angry and beat her up, and the domestic worker was reportedly made to stay awake for two days straight without meals.

The domestic worker turned to social media for help. Her post eventually came to the attention of Philippine labor officials and she was rescued from her employers. Annie arrived in the Philippines on Thursday and will be provided with assistance and skilled training from the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration(OWWA).

OWWA administrator Hand Cacdac said the employers may be blacklisted, and that the domestic worker’s recruitment agency will also be investigated.
