A 28-year-old Filipina was sentenced to three months in prison at the Eastern Magistrates’ Court in Hong Kong on Tuesday for stealing money from another domestic worker.

Jenny Anne GN pleaded guilty for one count of theft after she made several withdrawals and stole HK$5,830 (US$742) from the bank account of Lilian BC, who also worked for her former employer, hongkongnews.com.hk reported.

The court heard that the defendant stole the other woman’s ATM card and the written ATM PIN number from a drawer they shared. In total, 12 withdrawals and nine deposits were made using the victim’s ATM card between June 13 and August 24 last year.

On August 25, the card owner noticed the withdrawals when she had her passbook updated and saw 21 suspicious transactions. She reported this to the police and when they checked surveillance camera footage, the defendant was seen using the card to make the illegal withdrawals.

On March 10, the defendant returned to Hong Kong to work for a new employer in Sai Kung. She was arrested after landing at Hong Kong International Airport. The defendant’s lawyer pleaded for leniency, saying the defendant stole from her colleague due to the medical expenses of her son, who has a kidney problem.

Judge Peter Law reprimanded the defendant and said it was not a one-off incident or just a moment of greed as she made withdrawals a number of times, adding that he had reduced the sentence because of her guilty plea.
