A 49-year-old Filipina domestic worker was fined HK$1,200 (US$152) at the Eastern Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday for one count of theft after she “forgot” to pay for grocery items.

Yolanda Fernandez entered the Wellcome Supermarket in Siu Sai Wan on Hong Kong Island in October last year and was seen by a shop manager putting some utilities and food items into her recyclable bag, sunwebhk.com reported.

Then she picked up items for her employer. She then went to the cashier and paid for the employer’s goods but left without paying for those in her recyclable bag.

The manager stopped her outside the shop and found toothpaste, two toothbrushes, an electronic toothbrush, a can of coffee powder, a pack of cheese, four packs of chocolate and a pack of pork ribs worth HK$545 in total, but all without a purchase receipt.

The defendant told the manager she had money, but forgot to pay. The magistrate, however, said the prosecution had proven beyond reasonable doubt that the defendant was guilty.
