A 38-year-old Indonesian domestic worker was sentenced to four weeks in jail after pleading guilty to slapping an 88-year-old Singaporean woman suffering from dementia who refused to eat and spat out some of her food in an incident last August.
The defendant Tarminah had been recently hired by Quah Cheng Yip to look after her wheelchair-bound elderly mother, Sim Hong Kim, in her Jurong West home, the Shin Min Daily News reported.
Quah witnessed the assault at around 12:40pm on August 7, 2018, on her mobile phone in real time through a closed-circuit television camera that had been installed at her mother’s apartment.
While the worker was feeding Sim lunch, the woman refused to eat and spat out some of the food. Since it was her duty to make sure her charge finished her meals, Tarminah was said to be frustrated over the victim’s disobedience.
The worker slapped the woman on the right side of her face twice and on the left once while wiping clean the victim’s mouth. She was also seen pulling the elderly woman’s right ear twice and stopped only when Sim pushed her hand away.
Quah reported the case on August 20, and three days later her mother was taken to Ng Teng Fong General Hospital, where she was found to have a bruised left arm.
At the time of the assault, Tarminah had only been working for the family for four months. She reportedly regretted her behavior and apologized to the family, who said they had forgiven her.
