A 24-year-old Zambian woman denied a charge of manslaughter of a newborn baby which she had abandoned on street when she appeared in the High Court in Hong Kong on Thursday.
Natasha Mwale Bailey, a student, entered Hong Kong in September, 2017, and lived at a guesthouse in Wan Chai on Hong Kong Island until October 16, the Apple Daily reported. On October 17, she gave birth at the guesthouse before abandoning the newborn baby girl next to a rubbish bin in a back-alley.
The court heard that the baby was found by a part-time cleaner at 1 am on October 18. The cleaner found an object wrapped in a cloth in a rubbish bin in the alley. He initially thought it was the dead body of a cat or dog. He put it into a polyfoam box and put it in a rubbish bin on Hennessy Road.
The following morning, a staff member of a newspaper stall said the baby was found in a white foam box near a rubbish bin. The baby had no clothing and the umbilical cord was still attached to her body, news website HKo1.com reported.
The baby was rushed to Ruttonjee Hospital, but was pronounced dead at 7:44 a.m. The defendant was arrested after police looked at surveillance camera footage from nearby shops and buildings.
