A 28-year-old Vietnamese man who was spotted at a construction site by police during regular patrols in Keelung City, Taiwan, on Wednesday was arrested after he was identified as a tourist on a 14-day visa-free visit.
At around 4pm, the man was allegedly seen acting suspiciously by patrol officers from Keelung City Police Department at a construction site in the city’s Zhongshan district, the Pacific Daily reported.
Officers checked the man’s identity, and he was found to have arrived at Taoyuan International Airport on January 27, and was allowed to stay for two weeks on a visa-free travel permit.
Police say the man admitted that he had been picked up by compatriot friends, who referred him for the construction-worker job. The suspect said it was bad luck to have been caught on the very first day on the job.
While the illegal worker is to be taken to the National Immigration Agency where he will face repatriation, his employer at the construction site is also expected to be fined by the Keelung City Government for hiring him illegally.
