Retail and catering enterprises nationwide have achieved a sales record of about 1.005 trillion yuan (US$149 billion) during the Chinese New Year holiday, a rise of 8.5% from the same period last year, China News Service reported citing data released by the Ministry of Commerce.
The sales of domestic green food, smart home appliances, new digital products and local speciality products have maintained rapid growth during the holiday.
Shopping malls and outlets which integrated the functions of shopping, catering and entertainment were also popular among Chinese. The sales of seven key shopping centres in Shanghai increased by more than 20% year-on-year.
Experiential consumption such as leisure travel and watching movies are also very popular and on the rise. For the first six days of the holiday, the movie box office exceeded 5 billion yuan and the Forbidden City in Beijing received nearly 500,000 tourists.
