An Egyptian man has appeared in a Dubai court charged with raping a Filipino jobseeker twice in a hotel room.
The 27-year-old Filipina cleaner, who was looking for a job when her visa expired in April, said she met the man when she was heading to an interview in a hair salon in Karama. The Filipina said the man claimed his aunt had a business and would hire her as a secretary, the Khaleej Times reported.
“I gave him my mobile number as I needed to be employed,” the Filipina said. The man told the woman his aunt was willing to meet her and her office was near the hair salon. However, he insisted on driving the Filipina to the interview. Once she was in the car, the man said his aunt would meet her at a restaurant instead.
During the car ride, the man allegedly groped her while pretending to look for a pack of cigarettes the Filipina was sitting on. The man then stopped at a hotel and took her inside a room, where he raped her twice and later put 50 dirhams (US$13.60) in the woman’s purse. The Filipina was then let go and she went to inform the hotel reception about the incident. The police arrived and arrested the Egyptian man.
During the investigation, the man’s urine sample tested positive for hashish, a drug made from the resin of the cannabis plant. If convicted, the Egyptian man faces imprisonment followed by deportation. The trial has been set for March 12.
