A Hong Kong resident was praised after he called police to report he had found a wallet containing at least HK$10,000 in cash (US$1,274) in Tseung Kwan O in the New Territories on Monday. The man, named Kong Chai, posted a photo on a Facebook group called Tseung Kwan O showing a wallet, with at least 10 HK$1,000 banknotes, a credit card and an ATM card inside, news website HK01.com reported.

He wrote: “Found it in Tseung Kwan O, please call me if you are the owner.”

The wallet was found in a pavilion on Wan Poon Path, a jogging path outside the private housing estate Oscar By the Sea. Kong Chai said the wallet owner would be very worried by the loss. Many people shared the post, hoping to find the owner as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, some people suggested Kong Chai report the case to police and he finally called them and took the wallet to a police station. The owner of the wallet later contacted Kong Chai to thank him after getting it back. The owner later replied to the online post, praising Kong Chai as a Good Samaritan. To express his gratitude, the owner donated HK$1,000 to Médecins Sans Frontières, an international humanitarian NGO.

Kong Chai said he wanted to teach youngsters not to be greedy. He said: “I helped him (the wallet owner), he donated money to help the needy, meanwhile, the people who shared the post also helped the whole incident. What a meaningful Chinese New Year.”
