A Filipino man who was jailed in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates over the debt from a bounced check was freed from prison after the UAE authorities paid off his debt.
Albert Santos Gayd, 52, was previously jailed for one year and and three months in Sharjah Reformatory and Punitive Establishment (SRPE) after paying a landlord in Sharjah with a check that bounced, Khaleej Times reported.
After his landlord lodged a complaint, Gayd was jailed and unable to pay off the debt.
“The trial took place several times, but I couldn’t pay because I (was) in jail. And there was nobody to bail me out,” Gayd said.
During a tolerance forum, Gayd was called onstage where he was told that his debt was paid off and that he could return home to the Philippines and be reunited with his family. The Filipino was also surprised by the arrival of his brother whom the authorities brought from the Philippines to the UAE to attend Gayd’s release.
Gayd was one of 20 inmates who were released from prison as part of the inmates’ families forum organized by the Sharjah Police on the occasion of the Year of Tolerance.
