A Filipino couple has been arrested for trying to sell their newborn baby through social media. According to the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), a Facebook account was found showing pictures of the baby, who was born one week earlier, and messages on the alleged sale of the baby, GMA News reported.
Officers from the NBI-International Operations Division (NBI-IDO) and the social welfare department of Las Piñas City nabbed the couple and rescued the baby. Ronald Aguro, the chief of NBI-IDO, said the mother had already planned to sell and have the baby adopted when she became pregnant.
However, the father denied selling the child and said he and his wife just wanted to have the baby put up for adoption. The father claimed his wife was probably offered a large amount of money in exchange for the baby, but they never wanted to sell the child.
The authorities also arrested two suspects who were alleged to be agents helping the couple sell the baby. One of the suspects, Justin Eusebio, said the mother of the baby had chatted with him and asked for his help to put a price on the child.
NBI authorities said they are doubtful whether the couple arrested are the real parents of the child as they did not show signs of guilt for selling the baby. The NBI said prior to this case, they had received reports of babies missing from homes and hospitals.
The NBI said it would investigate the suspects’ mobile phones and Facebook accounts to find if there were other babies being sold online.
