Hong Kong police received an unusual report about intruders seen consuming fruits without paying in a supermarket on Lantau Island on Thursday.

The four intruders – stray cows – were witnessed by shoppers entering PARKnSHOP in Mui Wo, Oriental Daily reported.

video clip taken by a shopper and posted on social media showed the cows browsing fresh groceries and munching fruits, including berries and pears.

Many internet commentators said the cows seemed to be enjoying a Chinese New Year feast, but others expressed concern that the cows appeared to be eating plastic packaging which could make them ill.

A spokesperson for PARKnSHOP said that the cows may have accidentally broken into the store and left after a few minutes. Staff at the store reportedly destroyed damaged fruits and products and cleaned the shelves thoroughly.

The supermarket filed a report with the police.
