지난해 아시아 문화계의 최대 이슈는 단연 한국의 보이 그룹 방탄소년단(BTS)의 세계적인 성공이었다.
BTS는 전통적인 K팝 시장인 아시아를 넘어 글로벌 음악 차트를 석권하며 전 세계적으로 주목을 받았다. 지난 2012년 싸이가 “강남 스타일”로 빅 히트를 기록하며 서구 주류 언론의 주목을 받았으나, 싸이의 성공 스토리는 오래 가지 못했다. 하지만 아시아에서 유일하게 비틀즈와 비교되는 밴드인 BTS의 인기는 한편의 파격적인 비디오와 노래 한 곡에 그치지 않을 전망이다.
올해 BTS 못지않은 활약이 기대되는 K팝 스타들을 모아봤다.
블랙핑크는 빌보드 핫 100 차트에서 ‘뚜두뚜두’로 55위를 기록, K팝 걸밴드 중 가장 높은 순위를 기록했다. 이 곡은 발표 후 유튜브에서 한국 뮤직비디오 중 24시간내 최다 뷰를 기록했다. 블랙핑크 멤버 제니와 엑소 멤버 카이의 열애설이 보도되면서 연초부터 화제가 되기도 했다.
엑소
실력도 실력이지만 스마트한 마케팅의 사례를 보여주는 보이 밴드. 엑소는 한국인 6명으로 이루어진 Exo-K와 중국을 중심으로 활동하기 위해 중국인 멤버 4명과 한국인 멤버 2명으로 이루어진 Exo-M이라는 서브 그룹을 운영하고 있다. 앨범도 한국어와 중국어 버전으로 발매한다. 엑소는 2013년 첫번째 앨범 ‘XOXO’를 발표했고, 이 앨범에 속한 ‘으르렁’의 대히트로 이름을 알렸다. 특히 평창 동계올림픽 폐막식에서 마지막 무대를 장식하며 전 세계적인 주목을 끌었다.
선미
2007년 원더걸스의 멤버로 데뷔했으나, 2010년 학업 이유로 그룹을 떠났다. 3년 후 ‘24시간이 모자라’라는 곡으로 화려하게 복귀했다. 현재는 워너비 솔로 아티스트로 사랑받고 있다.
트와이스
한중일 멤버로 구성된 걸그룹. “Sixteen”이라는 리얼리티쇼를 통해 구성됐다. 2016년 싱글앨범 ‘치어업(Cheer Up)’이 빅히트를 치며 화려하게 데뷔했고, 이 곡은 그해 최고의 싱글 앨범이 됐다. 이후 현재까지 발표하는 싱글 앨범마다 차트 정상을 차지하며 꾸준한 인기를 누리고 있다.
레드벨벳
레드벨벳은 여러 상을 휩쓸며 절정의 인기를 누리는 걸그룹이다. 문재인 대통령의 평양 방문 당시 남북합동 공연에 참여해 더욱 유명해졌다. 트와이스의 노래 처럼 레드벨벳의 노래도 외우기 쉬운 반복구로 잘 알려져 있으나, 사회적 메시지도 담겨있다.
빅뱅
BTS가 등장하기 전 가장 유명하고 영향력 있는 보이그룹. 탑과 태양, 대성, 승리, G드래곤 등 인상적인 멤버들로 구성됐다. G드래곤은 솔로 활동을 통해 슈퍼스타로 발돋움했다. 현재 멤버들의 군입대로 활동이 중단됐으나, 2년 내 활동을 재개할 전망이다.

아이콘은 “WIN: Who is next”라는 YG 사내 서바이벌 프로그램에 출연한데 이어 “Mix & Match”라는 또 다른 서바이벌 프로그램을 거치면서 현재와 같은 7명의 멤버로 결성됐다. 아이콘은 자신들의 노래를 직접 작사, 작곡하는 것으로 유명하다.
청하
본명은 김찬미. 청하는 해체된 그룹 아이오아이의 멤버였다. 따라 부르기 쉬운 멜로디의 노래와 함께 빼어난 춤 실력을 뽐냈던 아이오아이 멤버중에서도 청하는 특히 잘 훈련된 코레오그라피로 유명했다. 청하는 선미처럼 워너비 여성 솔로 아티스트로 부상하고 있다.
아이즈원
일제 강제징용 배상 판결과 위안부 보상 문제 등으로 한일 관계가 꼬여있지만 대중문화의 영역에서는 다른 양상을 보이고 있다. 한국인과 일본인으로 구성된 걸그룹 아이즈원은 M-net의 리얼리티 프로그램 “프로듀스 48”을 통해 탄생했다. 데뷔 싱글인 ‘라비앙로즈’의 성공에 이어 다음 달 일본 데뷔를 앞두고 있다.
