중국 최대 명절인 춘제(春節) 때 개봉한 SF 영화 <유랑지구>가 개봉 일주일 만에 25억 위안(4,150억 원)의 ‘대박’ 흥행 수입을 올렸다. 영화는 태양의 노화로 위기에 처한 지구를 구하기 위한 중국인들의 사투를 담고 있다.

특수효과의 완성도가 워낙 뛰어나다 보니 많은 관람객들이 영화에서 일어난 일들이 실제로 일어날 것 같은 착각에 빠질 정도였다. 심지어 일부 영화광들은 영화 내용처럼 인류를 멸망시킬 수 있는 태양 폭풍이 일어나고, 태양이 최대 크기에 도달하여 지구를 뒤덮을 수 있는 적색 거성(巨星)으로 변할 때 인간이 지구를 구하기 위해 무슨 일을 할 수 있는지에 대해 활발히 논의하기도 했다.

<유랑지구>는 근 20년 전에 출판되어 SF계의 노벨상이라고 불리는 최고 권위의 SF 문학상인 휴고상을 받은 중국 소설가 류치신의 동명 단편소설을 원작으로 하고 있다.

영화를 본 많은 사람들의 두려움을 가라앉히느라 분주한 시간을 보내고 있는 그는 영화에서 일어난 일이 현실에서는 일어나지 않을 것이라고 강조한다.

그는 최근 중국 관영 TV 방송사인 중앙전시대(China Central Television)와 가진 인터뷰에서 “태양은 여전히 아주 양호한 상태를 유지하고 있다”며 “태양에 어떤 변화가 일어나서 지구를 녹여버리는 일은 아주 오랜 시간이 지난 먼 미래에나 일어날 것이다”고 내다봤다.

중국에서 영미 SF 문학계의 3대 거장으로 손꼽히는 SF 작가인 아서 C 클라크((Arthur C. Clarke)에 필적하는 인기를 끌고 있는 류는 중국의 SF 소설을 세계 수준으로 올려놓았다는 평가를 받은 ‘삼체(The Three-Body Problem)’ 3부작의 저자이기도 하다.

그는 19세기 프랑스의 소설가로 근대 SF의 선구자로 불리는 쥘 베른(Jules Verne)의 대표작 《지구 속 여행(Journey to the Center of the Earth)》을 읽고 SF 분야에 관심을 갖기 시작했다. “많은 책을 읽으면 자신만의 이야기를 쓰고 싶은 충동을 느끼게 된다”는 게 그의 설명이다.

영화는 가까운 미래를 배경으로 하고 있다. 태양이 급속히 노화되어 적색 거성으로 변하면서 대재앙급 기후 변화가 닥치자 인류는 지구가 새로운 태양을 찾기 위한 여정을 시작할 수 있도록 거대한 추진체를 건설하는 프로젝트에 착수한다.

영화의 주인공은 중국 우주비행사와 그의 아들이다. 부자는 지구가 태양계를 벗어나면서 목성에 충돌하는 것을 막기 위한 임무를 이끈다.

신화통신에 따르면, 영화를 연출한 궈판(郭帆) 감독은 실제와 같은 세트를 만들기 위해 중국과학원(Chinese Academy of Sciences) 과학자 4명을 컨설턴트로 초빙했다. 또한 15개월에 걸쳐 300명으로 이루어진 개념미술팀의 도움을 받아 3,000장에 달하는 정교한 영화 개념도를 제작했다.

영화에선 지구가 목성과 충돌하려고 할 때 대지진이 일어나면서 베이징과 상하이의 랜드마크 건물들이 무너지는 장면 등이 현란하게 묘사된다. 류는 “이 영화가 거액의 예산을 들여 만든 중국 최초의 SF 블록버스터라는 사실이 믿기 어렵다”며 “흥행에 성공한다면 중국 SF 영화 제작의 좋은 전기가 마련될 것이다”라고 말했다.

지금까지 중국에서 흥행했던 SF 영화는 대부분 할리우드 영화였다.
