연초 팀 쿡 애플 최고경영자(CEO)가 중국의 경기 둔화를 이유로 실적 전망을 하향 조정하자 애플의 주가는 폭락했다.
쿡 CEO는 투자자들에게 보낸 서한을 통해 “실적 전망에서 매출 감소분의 대부분, 그리고 거의 100% 이상인 전년동기대비 글로벌 매출 감소는 중화권에서 발생했다. 이는 아이폰, 맥(Mac), 아이패드에 모두에 걸쳐 일어난 일이다”고 말했다.
이 소식에 애플의 주가는 한때 10% 가까이 하락했다. 하지만 애플의 실적 증가세에 제동이 걸린 것과 대조적으로 중국 스마트폰 제조업체인 화웨이의 판매량은 고공행진을 하고 있다.
화훼이는 작년 스마트폰 출하량이 2,000만 대를 돌파했다고 밝혔다. 3분기 기준, 화훼이의 출하량은 전년동기대비 40% 가까이 늘어나며 전 세계 스마트폰 출하량 점유율이 15%에 근접했다.
작년 1~3분기 동안 화웨이는 1억4,550만 대의 스마트폰을 팔아 애플의 판매량 1억4,040만 대를 넘어섰다. 이는 세계에서 3번째로 큰 스마트폰 시장인 미국에서 화훼이 제품 판매가 사실상 금지된 가운데 이뤄낸 성과다.
매출 면에서는 여전히 애플과 큰 격차가 있지만 화훼이의 전 세계 시장 점유율은 크게 올라가고 있고, 하이엔드(high-end) 모델의 인기도 점점 더 높아지고 있다.
화훼이의 텃밭인 중국 시장만 놓고 봤을 때 애플은 뚜렷한 판매 감소세를 보이고 있다.
팀 쿡 CEO가 어떤 그럴듯한 설명을 내놓건 간에 애플의 쇠락 이유를 단지 중국 경제가 둔화됐거나 고객들의 핸드폰 업그레이드 빈도가 줄었기 때문만으로 보기는 어렵다. 애플의 중국 시장 판매 부진은 중국 고객들이 값은 싸지만 성능은 뒤지지 않는 화훼이 제품을 살 수 있어 굳이 더 많은 돈을 주고 애플 제품을 구매하지 않기 때문이라는 분석도 있다.
