An animated short movie with a Chinese theme and whose director is a woman born in China has won an Oscar.
On February 24, Canadian-Chinese director Domee Shi won the Best Animated Short Film at the 91st Academy Awards for her work on Bao. Bao was shown in cinemas before all screenings of the summer hit movie The Incredibles 2, and is also the first Pixar short film to be directed by a female director in the company’s 32-year history.
Shi, who was born in Chongqing, China, moved to Toronto, Canada when she was two years old. She reportedly drew inspiration from her own life with her mother.
When she accepted the award with the short film’s producer Becky Neiman-Cobb, she told “all the nerdy girls out there to not be afraid to tell your stories to the world.”
Bao is an eight-minute-long short about a Chinese mother who makes a batch of stuffed buns. One of the buns comes to life, which prompts her to take care of it as if it were her child. The short film generated a lot of buzz on the Internet, with Asian audiences drawing similarities between the short film and “helicopter parents” in modern Asian subcultures.
