Members of the Vietnamese community in Seattle in the United States have rallied against plans to deport people set by the Trump administration.

On January 11, community members and leaders joined forces in the Chinatown-International District in Seattle to protest against the Trump administration’s plans to dissolve the 2008 Repatriation Agreement, Northwest Asian Weekly reported.

The agreement allowed Vietnamese refugees who arrived in the United States after the Vietnam War to stay in the country.

The rally saw people march from Hing Hay Park to Little Saigon. State representative and former refugee My-Linh Thai said the refugees have experienced trauma beyond any other and the administration was trying to send them back to that trauma.

Other officials also showed solidarity. Washington governor Jay Inslee shared his support in a statement that was publicized by his special assistant Alejandro Sanchez. Inslee stated that he stands firm in his support for a diverse and inclusive society.

According to official statistics, more than 350 immigrants from Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam were ordered to be deported in the fiscal year of 2018. The orders were imposed on some residents who had lived in the United States for decades after escaping the horrors of war in their home countries.

Many Cambodians who grew up in the US have already been sent back to a country they do not know and have suffered extraordinary hardships.
