Two Filipino cleaners who were accused of stealing a laptop from an Emirati woman were sentenced to three months in jail in Dubai on December 25.

The Emirati woman said she had been in a supermarket when the incident happened in October last year. The woman used the washroom and forgot to take her Macbook Pro with her when she left, Gulf News reported.

When the woman realized she forgot her laptop, she rushed back to the supermarket, only to find her laptop was missing. The woman then called police and reported the laptop stolen.

Police investigations led to the arrest of two Filipina cleaners who work in the supermarket. The two were accused of stealing the laptop worth 21,000 dirhams (US$5,718), but they denied the accusations and pleaded not guilty at the Dubai Court of First Instance.

One of the cleaners said they had found the laptop on the washroom floor, but did not steal it. The court sentenced the two to three months in prison followed by their immediate deportation.
