A group of three Vietnamese were arrested in north-central Vietnam for allegedly smuggling 42 kilograms of heroin from Laos. According to VN Express, the three people were stopped by authorities at the Cau Treo International Border Gate in Huong Son district, Ha Tinh province.

They were entering Vietnam in a car with the heroin allegedly packed in paper boxes.

One of the three men was identified as Nguyen Quang Trung, a Huong Son local. The other two have only been identified as citizens of Nghe An province so far.

Police say the three have confessed that they were going to distribute the drugs smuggled from Laos in Vietnam.

Vietnam has some of the toughest drug laws in the world. Those found guilty of possessing and/or smuggling more than 600 grams of heroin can be given the death penalty.
