A total of 484 Filipino children either born out of wedlock overseas or born to victims of sexual assault were repatriated from Kuwait to the Philippines in 2018.
An official from the Philippine Embassy in Kuwait said the children were deported between January and December last year in cooperation with the Ministry of Interior of Kuwait, the Kuwait Times reported.
According to Glenda Relova, assistant secretary and spokesperson for the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), the needs of the children were fully taken care of during their stay at embassy shelters until they were deported to the Philippines.
“The Ministry of Welfare is helping to bring Filipinos back to their country in cooperation with attachés, especially from Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar, and providing counseling to individuals and groups,” Relova said.
Earlier this month, the DSWD said the Philippine government has assisted a total of 8,197 unregistered children from January 2017 to November 2018. Unregistered children include those born to parents seeking asylum as well as sexual abuse victims and trafficked Filipinos. There are about 185,000 Filipinos living in Kuwait.
