A truck ran into a crowd of pedestrians on a highway in Vietnam on Monday, killing nine and injuring three others. At about 2 pm in the Kim Thanh district of Hai Duong province, the truck hit a group of local commune officials on National Highway 5, the VN Express reported.

The officials had just finished burning incense at a martyrs’ cemetery and were heading back to work when the accident happened. A witness said the victims were walking in the motorbike lane in the opposite direction to the truck.

Authorities are investigating the crash. The driver of the truck reportedly fled the scene after the accident. According to Vietnam’s National Traffic Safety Committee, more than 18,720 traffic accidents took place in 2018, leaving 8,244 people dead and almost 14,800 injured.
