A 29-year-old Filipino has been arrested by police for allegedly being involved in random attacks on people on the streets of Kowloon on Saturday.

The suspect named Herrero, who is said to be unemployed, was accused of an attack on a 60-year-old local man surnamed Lai, who was walking along Ma Tau Wai Road in To Kwa Wan at 10pm.

Herrero allegedly hit Lai’s head three to four times before pushing the older man’s head against the ground, Sing Tao Daily reported.

Lai ended up bleeding and lying on the ground, so passersby called the police.

After, the suspect walked toward Hung Hom and allegedly had a nasty encounter with a 43-year-old local woman surnamed Chan on Chi Kiang Street, about 300 meters away from the scene of the first attack.

The suspect attacked Chan, grabbing her, destroying her glasses and allegedly punching her in the face before running off.

Chan, who was shocked and in pain from the attack, ended up sitting on the street crying. Passers-by also reported that incident to the police.

The two victims were sent to hospital for medical treatment, while police checked surveillance camera footage from the neighborhood to properly identify the assailant.

At around noon on Sunday, officers from Kowloon City Police Station found the suspect near Ma Tau Wai Road and arrested him. He was detained at the police station for alleged wounding, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and criminal damage.

Police are investigating the reasons behind the attacks. Given the two victims did not know the suspect, officers believe that the suspect may have been affected by alcohol or drugs.
