A 39-year-old Filipina asylum seeker was sentenced to two months in jail after she pleaded guilty to theft in the Kowloon City Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
Noelyn Domingo, a former domestic worker, admitted to stealing from a H&M store on the ground floor of Silvercord Shopping Centre on Canton Road in Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon, sunwebhk.com reported.
In the first case, she took a pair of shoes and two handbags and left without paying in October last year. The second case happened in November when she stole three T-shirts.
She was caught on both occasions and charged with theft, but she jumped bail. In the latest case, she stole three pairs of trousers worth HK$1,450 on January 26.
Altogether, the total amount she stole on the three occasions amounted to $4,150 (US$184). The guard at the shop stopped her outside after he spotted her taking the trousers from a rack and putting them in a bag without paying and leaving.
The trousers were found inside her bag. The guard called the police and they arrested her. The defense lawyer said his client came to Hong Kong in 2011 to work as a domestic helper and was now a torture claimant.
Magistrate Woo Huey-fang convicted the Filipina after she pleaded guilty. Woo said the sentence should be three months in jail but she cut it by a third because of her guilty plea.
