A Filipino couple who recently got married drowned while they were snorkeling during their honeymoon in the Maldives.

In a statement, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said the couple, Leomer and Erika Lagradilla, got married on December 18 and left Manila for their honeymoon on January 9. The couple were guests at a resort on Dhiffushi Island.

The department said the Lagradillas went snorkeling on Sunday but both started to have problems in the water.

The couple was “rescued” but were in bad shape when brought out of the water. They were declared dead when they were brought to a local hospital.

“Both were rescued by resort workers but were pronounced dead upon arrival at a local hospital. Authorities were reported to be investigating the incident, ” the statement said.

The DFA contacted the couple’s immediate relatives in Laguna in the Philippines and instructed the Philippine Embassy in Dhaka to coordinate with authorities in the Maldives on arrangements to bring the couple’s bodies back home.

The newlyweds were both Filipino migrant workers. Erika, 30, had worked in Saudi Arabia, while Leomer, 29, worked in Singapore.

The couple met in high school and had been together for 10 years, GMA News reported.
