A Filipino domestic worker in Abu Dhabi who was given the money for a house and small block of land in the Philippines from her employer recently received another gift: a car.
Dina Tenerife Celo, 47, who started working for her Emirati employer in 1998, recently gave her a second-hand Nissan so she doesn’t need to take public transport to visit her son in Abu Dhabi, The Filipino Times reported.
Celo said her employer, Melissa McPike saw that she was struggling on public transport and wanted to help her see her son – who is also working in Abu Dhabi – more often by giving her a car.
“It takes me hours to travel by bus to see my son. The car is a big help for me to see him more often now,” Celo said.
The employer said Celo was trustworthy and hardworking. McPike said she does not consider Celo as an employee but as part of the family.
In October 2017, McPike gave the domestic worker 23,000 dirhams (US$6,263) to buy a block of land in Camarines Sur in the Philippines and also financed the construction of her house.
Celo said she could not afford a house despite working in the United Arab Emirates for more than 20 years, but due to her employer’s generosity, her dream was coming true.
