A Filipino domestic worker was executed in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday after being found guilty of murder. The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said in a statement that the 39-year-old Filipina, whose identity was not disclosed, was sentenced to death on Tuesday for murder.
The DFA has informed her next of kin, who have requested privacy during their time of bereavement. According to Saudi Arabia’s Interior Ministry, the Filipina was accused of killing a Saudi man and attempting to kill his daughter, Middle East Monitor reported.
The ministry said the Filipina stabbed the man in the face while he was asleep which led to his death. The Filipina then attempted to stab the man’s daughter and hit her with a hammer on her face and head. The girl survived the blows and suffered injuries.
The Filipina attempted to kill herself after the crime but was unsuccessful. Saudi police arrested her and she was charged with murder. The Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court upheld the death sentence issued against the Filipina and a royal order was issued to enforce it.
Philippine Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Adnan Alonto said the Philippine Embassy provided the woman with a lawyer to assist her in all stages of her trial, sent representatives to visit her and provided her family in the Philippines with regular updates about her case.
“The Department regrets that it was not able to save the life of the Filipina after the Saudi Supreme Judicial Council classified her case as one in which blood money does not apply under Shariah law,” the DFA said.
