A 64-year-old man, said to be an amateur TV actor, was found dead on a bench in Tsim Sha Tsui on Wednesday.
A security guard tried to wake up the man who was thought to be sleeping on a bench when the guard did a morning patrol along the waterfront near Tsim Sha Tsui Center on Mody Road, Apple Daily reported.
When the man did not respond, the security guard contacted the police.
When police officers and ambulancemen arrived, they certified the man, named Lau, as dead at the scene.
Police said Lau’s death was not suspicious but the actual cause would have to be determined after an autopsy.
Officers also found plastic bags at the scene that contained Lau’s personal items, such as a quilt and clothes.
After an initial investigation, it was reported that the deceased man was an amateur actor for a local TV broadcaster who also did part-time jobs to raise a family.
It was understood he had been in financial difficulty and was unable to afford the rent for a subdivided flat, where he used to live in Mong Kok.
Sing Tao Daily reported that the officers had contacted Lau’s girlfriend, who said she was unaware that he was homeless.
The woman said Lau had two jobs, and that after getting off work around midnight, he wanted to save travelling time and rest before starting another job in the morning at a Tsim Sha Tsui eatery.
The lowest temperature overnight was about 13.7 degrees Celsius.
In November last year, a 41-year-old man who worked at two jobs a day was found dead inside an internet cafe in Sham Shui Po, Kowloon where he slept for three years, hoping to save money to support his wife and daughter in Shenzhen.
