A 42-year-old housewife was found not guilty at a Penang Sessions court in Malaysia on Thursday of voluntarily causing hurt to her domestic worker after she agreed to pay immediate compensation to the Cambodian woman.
On December 20, Chan Lay Lee was back in court to face the charge after she had reportedly struck her 22-year-old Cambodian domestic worker with a metal pipe between July 2016 and February 2017 at her home in Lebuhraya Jelutong, the China Press reported.
Earlier, on November 14, 2018, Chan had been sentenced to six years in jail and fined 100,000 ringgit by the Penang High Court for voluntarily causing grievous bodily harm an Indonesian woman named Jubaedah, eventually causing her death.
Chan told the court she was willing to pay 20,000 ringgit in cash as compensation to the Cambodian victim, who said she was willing to take it. As a result, Chan walked free at the trial without the need of extending her jail term or fines.
Meanwhile, the worker was granted a special permit by the court which allowed her to return to Cambodia as soon as possible.
