A 55-year-old woman was jailed for two months by a Singapore court after pleading guilty to abusing her Filipino domestic worker on four occasions between March and May this year.
The woman was ordered to pay S$2,000 in compensation to the victim, who is 25 years old.
The defendant, surnamed Loh, is a property agent who hired the Filipina on December 18 last year to work as a domestic at her home in HDB Block 13 on St George’s Road, the Shin Min Daily News reported.
The court learned that the first instance of abuse was noted in March this year when the employer accused her worker of using too much “expensive” soap for cleaning. Loh punched the Filipina in the head and ordered her to use less soap.
Later, the employer punched the victim in the head again after complaining that she was not cleaning the floor well enough.
In early May the employer, who had a habit of recording the number of slices of cheese left, got angry after finding she was one slice short. She confronted the victim, who admitted she took one to make a sandwich for herself because she was starving.
That stirred Loh to beat the maid on her right arm.
On May 25, the worker informed her employer that she had taken out a S$1,000 loan from a legal moneylender. Loh, who was reportedly very discontent, then slapped her worker on the face more than five times.
The victim sought help from a compatriot, who assisted her to file a report of abuse with the police.
Loh learned of the police report and made an offer to the worker – to pay off her debts, cover her medical bills (S$110) and buy her a ticket to fly back home if she withdrew the case.
