An investigative report by The Associated Press (AP), that uncovered thousands of Indonesian girls going missing while migrating for work, has drawn a reaction from an Indonesian official.
Vice-governor of East Nusa Tenggara (ENT) province Josef Nae Soi said officials will coordinate with police to find the missing girls that were mentioned in the AP report, Sentinel-Echo reported.
Soi added that officials will also be strengthening airport checks and seaports to intercept traffickers in action. According to the vice-governor, 386 people who were being trafficked were saved by authorities from October to November.
Soi made his stance public only one day after the AP report was issued. The report revealed that hundreds, maybe thousands, of girls have disappeared from ENT province. Many of them were reportedly conned by illegal recruiters who enticed teenage girls with false promises of well-paying jobs overseas.
Interpol will also be reached out to for a resolution to the problem. According to the AP report, more than 61,000 migrant workers have gone missing or were killed since 2014, with more undocumented cases yet to be uncovered.
