Two university students are in a critical condition after falling into the sea in Western District on Hong Kong Island on Monday night.
At 10am, a 24-year-old man surnamed Chan, who studies history at the University of Hong Kong, and his girlfriend, a 19-year-old woman surnamed Leung, who studies economics at the same university, were found in water near the Western Wholesale Food Market, Apple Daily reported.
Two male passersby found the couple, who were floating in the water. They threw lifebuoy rings into the sea before jumping into the water to rescue them.
Meanwhile, other passersby called the police. Marine police officers ended up pulling the four people out of the water.
The young couple, who had both lost consciousness, were taken to Queen Mary Hospital to be resuscitated.
Officers investigated the scene and found two pairs of shoes and two backpacks with clothes and a laptop in them. But no suicide notes were found.
It was understood that the young couple were in a critical condition and both in a coma.
Police returned to the scene on Tuesday night to investigate further to try to find out whether the young people attempted to commit suicide or fell into the water by accident.
