A Filipino fashion designer behind the evening gown of newly crowned Miss Universe – Catriona Gray of the Philippines – revealed that the design was inspired by the Mayon volcano.

Designer Mak Tumang said in a Facebook post the outfit that Gray wore during the evening gown segment of this year’s Miss Universe pageant was inspired by the iconic volcano in Albay, Bicol, which is Gray’s hometown, Rappler reported.

Tumang said the Mayon volcano was named after a mythological heroine in Philippine folklore named Daragang Magayon (which means ‘beautiful lady’ in English) and he had incorporated the volcano’s lava flow into the design of the gown.

“Catriona can be considered as the modern day Daragang Magayon. She embodies the Filipina’s beauty, intelligence and burning passion,” Tumang said in his Facebook post.

On Monday in Thailand, Gray was crowned as the new Miss Universe at this year’s pageant.

The Filipino-Australian model is the fourth to win the title, following Pia Wurtzbach, who won the crown in 2015.
