A former migrant worker was arrested in Camanjac, Negros Oriental in the Philippines for being in possession of 15 packets of illegal drugs worth PHP885,000 (US$16,695).

On December 12, Arniel Repe, 36, was arrested during a buy-bust operation conducted by the City Drug Enforcement Unit, the Regional Special Operations Group and the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency, Negros Chronicle reported.

According to Repe, he went to Consolacion, Cebu on November 25 to collect the drugs and to deliver them to Dumaguete City for distribution during a festival in the city. Repe said he was only asked to carry the drugs.

Authorities seized 15 packets of suspected methamphetamine, a mobile phone and a motorcycle allegedly used to deliver the drugs to Dumaguete City.

In the Philippines, the maximum penalty for possessing illegal drugs is life imprisonment and a fine ranging from PHP500,000 to PHP10 million (US$9,428 to US$188,554).
