The Canadian government on Tuesday confirmed earlier reports that a former diplomat had been detained in China after the high-profile arrest of a Chinese executive in Vancouver.
Public Safety Minister Ralph Goodale said Canada was “sparing no effort” to ensure the safety of Michael Kovrig, who has previously worked at the Canadian Embassy in Beijing.
Chinese officials have not given a reason for Kovrig’s arrest and Canada’s Foreign Ministry is unable to release further details regarding the case, CBC reported on Tuesday.

“Canadian diplomatic officials have been in touch with their Chinese counterparts to explain how seriously Canadians view this,” Goodale said. “Clearly we are deeply concerned.…”
Kovrig’s detention comes as court proceedings for the chief financial officer of Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei, Meng Wanzhou, continue in Vancouver.
Meng is the daughter of the company’s founder, and her arrest, which is tied to violations of US sanctions on Iran, has led to condemnations from Beijing. Meng is facing possible extradition to the US.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also weighed in on the issue of Kovrig’s detention.
“Obviously we are aware of the situation of a Canadian detained in China,” Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said, as quoted by CBC. “We have been in direct contact with the Chinese diplomats and representatives. We are engaged on the file, which we take very seriously, and we are providing consular assistance to the family.”

Of for love of Jesus, enough of the sanctimonious bullshite. this was a political kidnapping assisted by the Government of Canada. The entire purpose was to deep six the agreement Trump made with Xi , nothing more. When talking about rule of law when was the last time a CFO , or CEO of a huge company like Googla, or Microsoft been arrested in Canada for extradition to the USA or any other country? Hint , never. It is not done and has not been done in any country in the world until this disgraceful episode. This whole mess is so racist it makes you sick.
And you are so enthralled by the observance of rules and rule of law in Canada and the USA how many Banksters, who stole and defrauded the American and Canadian population causing the trashing of the world`s economy went to jail. How many were charged? How many spent a single day in custody. like I said cut out the sanctimonious bullshite, I am Canadian and I know just how the Government enforces the law, and it is now and has always been no law for the rich and nothing but strict enforcement for the poor. Until they got their marching orders from Washington and created this disaster.
This is just another example of American aggression abroad applying American domestic law on foreign soil and Canada snapping to attention and obeying it`s master. Dusgusting. I not only hope that China holds on to the Canadian they have until Meng is allowed to go home but I hope that they gather up a few Americans and another few Canadians just to show they mean business.
Trump is not right about a lot of things but he was right when he was infuriated when he heard about that arrest. It was political sabotage, nothing more.

As a Canadian I find your post very offensive. Canada acted upon a request from the United States for arrest of Meng for a possible extradition. Canada agreed to do this because we have an extradition treaty with the United States. Meng was released when certain conditions were met that guaranteed that she was not a flight risk. She is now back at her home in Vancouver until her next court appearance in early February. At that time the extradition proceedings will begin and the judge will examine if there is probable cause you grant the extradition request based upon evidence. This is a long process whereby Meng will have the opportunity to appeal if it comes to that. Our Prime Minister is not glueless but acted as a neutral party by reinstating the fact that Canada is a country of the rule of law which respects it’s International obligations. With any thing that has to do with the courts or law it is better to act rationally rather than emotionally.
China had acted emotionally and has not waited for the actions of the courts in Canada to advance this file. Please inform yourself before you point fingers at Canada. We are doing what needs to be done under the circumstances both legally and ethically. The justice system in Canada is fair and through and it is up to the judge to render his ruling based upon the evidence presented. China does not understand a rules based system or the rule of law. Unfortunately the state is the law and this makes any relationship with China very difficult. With all due respect to the posts on this site.

China applies its laws in China. Nothing wrong with it. If Canada can arrest Ms. Meng Wanzhou without charges, so China can arrest a Canadian without charges. As a result of this arrest, the Canadian Court has released Ms. Meng Wanzhou on bail, valued at 10 million Canadian dollars. The Chinese Court will request the same amount of money for the release on bail for the Canadian ex diplomat. And if the ex Canadian diplomat is unable to dish out the money, he will rot in prison.

Canada is easy meat for both China and US. Canada is clueless. The US just told Canada you are on your own. Thanks, no thanks. China has warned Canada, there will be consequences.

I think China should start a massive detainment of key Canadian officials. A total of ten of them should be held in jail, especially those who frequent brothels and do lotsa drugs. A humiliating display of Chinese Justice will convince Ottawa to stop messing around. Sissy boy Trudeau doesn’t have the stomach for that type of conflict.
