Police in Banda Aceh city have arrested 37 inmates who, last Thursday, escaped the Lambaro correctional facility.
Trisno Riyanto, the Chief of the Banda Aceh City Police Senior Commissioner said on December 1 that 37 escapees had been re-captured, tempo.co reported. He added that the inmates were found in Banda Aceh, Aceh Besar, Lhokseumawe and Pidie.
Another 76 escapees remain on the run.
Riyanto stated that the prisoners may face additional jail time due to charges relating to vandalism of the facility. Chief of Aceh Provincial Police Rio S. Rampak asked the escaped inmates to surrender promptly, giving them three days to do so.
On November 29, 113 inmates escaped the Lambaro correctional facility by breaking through the rear fences and front windows. According to Aceh Provincial Police Adjunct Senior Commissioner Ery Apriyono, six inmates were responsible for inciting a riot that led to the mass escape. Two of the masterminds were convicted murderers, while the other four were serving sentences for drugs offences.
During the escape, the inmates attacked guards with bottles of chilli-laced water and gym equipment such as barbells and crowbars. They cut through wire fences before escaping across rice fields. On the day of the escape, only ten guards were on duty.
