Official statistics suggest that about 79% of female Internet users in Indonesia use it to access social media. Our Sahrizal, head of the Statistics Indonesia (BPS) poverty statistics section, quoted the figures at a seminar for women’s empowerment and child protection on Tuesday.

After social media, 64% of them use the Internet for news, 41% for entertainment, 28% for work and 20% for e-mail, The Jakarta Post reported.

Jakarta holds the highest Internet usage rate in the country at 57%, whereas Papua has the lowest at 14%. Around 91% of Internet users use smartphones to access the Web.

In 2015, the World Bank cited statistics indicating that only around 20% of women in Indonesia used the Internet. But according to Statista.com, about 47.5% of Internet users in Indonesia were female as of mid-2016.

In 2017, there were about 105 million Internet users in the country, compared with 97 million in 2016, another chart showed.
