Waves of floods and landslides have caused at least 12 deaths in Central Vietnam.

On Sunday 18, an official statement revealed that tropical storm Toraji has killed 12 people in the Khanh Hoa province of Vietnam, AFP reported. Toraji has destroyed houses and a small reservoir in the Phuoc Dong commune.

An unnamed provincial disaster office official told AFP that while the search for victims continues, hundreds of soldiers have been dispatched to assist disaster victims.

As a result of the storm, the main highway that links the north and the south was briefly disrupted. Railway routes have also suffered, homes have been buried under rubble and vehicles drowned in floods.

Victims told the press about their escape from the disaster. Liem, a resident of Nha Trang city ran away the moment he heard rocks falling. When he returned hours later, houses in his district were decimated.

Vietnam is often victim to heavy rains during the monsoon season. Since the beginning of the year, at least 185 lives have been lost to natural disasters.
